Information on the early Christophers and Austin (Augustine)

  • Notes
    • Christopher Choate [7] was born 12 August 1720 probably on his parent's farm "Choate's Fancy".

Christopher [7] at age 20 inherited "Choate's Contrivance" on the death of his oldest brother Augustine [5]. "Choate's Contrivance" was 100 acres of uncultivated land in Baltimore Co. Christopher [7] sold this land to William Lewis on the 29th of May 1742. The inherited the property gave Chritopher the means to migrate to Virginia.

There is one internet story that Augustine Choat also received land in Lunenburg Co., VA as payment for military service. This is wrong.

20th of May 1742 Christopher [3] cosigned with his father the sale of "Choate's Fancy". It is not clear why Christopher [7] would have to join in the signing of this deed, since Christopher [3] had bought it in 1722, but since Christopher [7] did not have anyone to relinquish dower rights it may be assumed that he was unmarried in 1742.

1750 -- Baltimore County, MD Rent Rolls -- Debt Book -- show Christopher Choate indebted 4 shillings each for "Choate's Contrivance" (inherited from his brother Augustine who died 8/2/1740).

Christopher [7] at age 29 next appears in 1749 on the Lunenburg Co. Virginia tax records with his brothers Richard [9] and Sabret [8]. They appear together on this tax list through 1752.

The first white man to settle permanently in what is now Tennessee was William Bean. Bean built a cabin in 1768 near the Watauga River, on Boone's Creek. William Bean came to this area from Pittsylvania Co VA, where in 1767 he lived very near Richard [9] Choate. Several years later many people from Pittsylvania Co had settled in this area of Tennessee. These early settlers thought they where in Virginia Territory. It appears that Christopher [7] and his family and his brother Richard and his family followed William Bean to Tennessee for the opportunity of land.

Thomas and Austin Choate (sons of Christopher i66 b. 12 Aug 1720 MD)??
The militia records of 1768 show Thomas and Austin Choate as being on the militia rolls of Captain William Christian of Bedford County, Va. In 1768 the company made a trek to the Big Island of The Holsten River in an encounter with the Cherokees.
