Histories 1832 Captain William Thomas Narrative History
William Thomas Choate was born in the Little River area east of Sparta NC. The acquired over six hundred acres of land, was appointed clerk of Little River Primitive Baptist Church and eventually was made Captain in the 61st Regiment. He was mortally wounded in the Battle of Cold Harbor. His war letter can be found on this web site.

Notes - William Thomas [27] Choate was born in Ashe Co. NC (now Alleghany Co). He was the third of seven children born to Richard [20] Choate and Sarah [24] Edwards. At nineteen he married Martha [32] Fender, daughter of John and Martha Tolivar Fender. William Thomas was granted 100 acres on Little River on 23 May 1853. This was his and Martha's home. It was located on the present Bill Choate Road, off highway #18, toward Galax, VA. The home was left to their only daughter Sarah Jane Choate Truitt. In 1978 the house was torn down and replaced.
On August 3, 1857, William Thomas was appointed clerk of Little River Primitive Baptist Church. On May 3, 1862, William Thomas enlisted in Company I, 61st North Carolina Regiment and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Civil War. The 61st Regiment was organized in Wilmington under Colonel James Radcliff. He was promoted to Captain January 3, 1863. He died of wounds received at Cold Harbor June 3, 1864. After his death, efforts to have his body returned home were unsuccessful. He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Richmond VA Grave no. 25, Row U Division F.

William T. Choate was born and raised in the part of Ashe County, NC that was sectioned off in 1859 to become Alleghany County. He was the son of Richard "Dickie" Choate and Sarah "Sallie" Edwards. His brother John was killed in Richmond in September of 1862. His brother Sowell died July of 1863 at Gettysburg. As William lay dying, he spoke of his home in the mountains and asked someone to tell his wife that he desired that she name their baby son, who was born November 1863, after him... which she did.
