These are all listed as mulatto with the parent born in NC and all the children in TN. Living with them is Susan Pendergrass (white) 20 born in TN.

1870 Census McMinn Co Tn 1st Dist has Jason Shoat 56, Matilda 56, Bethena 16, Louisa 14 and James 12. Nearby is Jacob Shoat 30 TN with Anna 18 TN.

From Cousin Aisha (33) Notes - "Jason was born in 1801 in Haywood County, NC and that he later left NC before the Indian removal. Jason went on to marry a woman by the name of Matilda Pressley who sometimes was also known as Matilda Matthews. Jason and Matilda leave no traces of their whereabouts until they 'mysteriously' appear on a census in Tennessee in the year 1860. By then, they have several children, the oldest being 19. Prior to 1860, there is literally no record of this family?. Online records, not documents, say that Jason's GRANDMOTHER was a woman by the name of Bethena Helton/Hilton. It is said that Bethena married a man with the last name of 'SHOAT' - there is no first name for this man and for whatever reason, there is no hints of Jason's parents. Jason Shoat filed a Southern Spoliation (Claim #9669 for $265) against General Sherman after the Civil War, which can be found online. His daughters, Nancy and Louisa applied for Indian Money and were rejected due to only a minimal amount of Indian bloodline. It's said they were 'mostly' negro?. It is also said that Jason died prior to 1910 and on the 1900 census he was living with his daughter, Nancy Goins in TN. (the 1900 census has the last name written as 'Gains?)"

" from findagrave 175382794 Elizabeth "Bettie" Shoat "She was the Mother of two known children by York Carson. Their son's names were Jason and William. She was last recorded on the Oct.13th, 1850 ; 8th district, Monroe,Co.TN Census when she was seventy years old, and listed as Mulatto. May she rest in Heavenly Peace. Birth and death dates are approximate. (bio. by Donna Choate Sigmon)"

Also from findagrave (#159988691) "Family legend says that the CHOATE's were a well to do family. Lavesta was a servent girl whose father was a Welshmen and whose mother was a Cherokee. When Thomas married against his parents wishes he was forced to move to Jamestown, later New Hope, Marion County, Tennesee in about 1817. He recieved a grant of land (120 acres) from the state of Tennesee on January 9, 1830 on which he resided and raised a family of 7 (had two wives) and died there in 1871."

in a letter written in 1977 by Janette Smallwood's mother -- "Christopher Choate had a son named David. David Choate 'stole' another man's wife - This womans name was 'Judith' and she was an Alabama (tribe) Indian - not from state of Alabama. She was Mrs Judith Holstein - but as far as I know no one knows her maiden name. Mama said she was a 'Crowell' David and Judith Choate were married in Natchez, Mississippi. Judith had a child by Holstein before she married David - (No one knows the child's name)"
